Blown glass - Origin

Blown glass is one of the most famous glass craft techniques. It arrived in Tonalá in the 20th century where workshops progressed to become the capital of blown glass in Mexico.

The name comes from the technique on how it's made. It consists of heating the glass to a melting point, blowing air through a metal tube and making a bubble. From there you can begin to give it the desired shape, either manually using tools or with a steel mold.

This technique is part of a branch of heat handling glass, more specifically fusion techniques. Which consists of making the glass reach its melting point and then letting it cool in the slowest way possible. The main characteristics of this technique is that at very high temperatures, the glass is very moldable and perfect for giving it different shapes and textures.
